It’s not uncommon for college students to work as interns. It is a temporary job that they take to get experience and knowledge in the field they are interested in. It is also an opportunity to start a career. But did you know that you can get an internship while in high school?

More and more high school students realize that they need experience to start a career and internship can be a good first step towards it. All students face challenges when searching for internships but high school students face even bigger challenges because they are not considered the main applicants for internships.

However, there are so many benefits of starting early that high school students are motivated to overcome all obstacles to find internships. Here are several simple steps you can do to find internships while still in high school.

1. Choose The Field Of Interest

The perfect internship is the one that suits your interests. If you like everything artistic, focus in design companies. However, it is fine for a high school student to be confused about the field of interest. Still, try to come up with topics that you like the most.

High school students don’t have much time to search for internship. You have to find at least 10 hours for internship so think if it fits in the school year. Sometimes, high school students prefer to work during summer break when they have more time.

2. Connect With Others

You may not know that one of your friends knows a person who is your chance for internship. Your teachers, parents and their friends make a wide network that you can ask for help. But you should start early, at least several months before you want to start your internship.

You can also use social media to find local companies that are interested in students. Interact with them to get their attention.

3. Search Online

Many businesses post about internship opportunities online. There are even databases that allow you to search for internship based on your location and interests. Don’t hesitate to contact companies and ask about opportunities.

Don’t forget about your school. We recommend contacting individual professors whose websites are appealing to you. Make sure you explain properly why you contact them. Many teachers will be happy to teach a young person who is passionate about the same thing.

4. Prepare The Pitch

Before you contact a company, you should prepare a short pitch. In businesses, the pitch should be less than one minute long and you should be able to introduce yourself, your interests and objectives. One minute is all you have to impress a company representative.

In your pitch, you should tell about your field of interest and experience. High school students don’t have any experience but you can emphasize why you want to work in this company and how they can help you. You should also mention how long you’re going to work in the company.

You can also add something about why they should consider a high school student. Think about everything you can offer, such as class experience, social media savvy, etc.

5. Be Careful When Choosing A Company

It’s easy to get overexcited about internship opportunities but remember that some companies will try to take advantage over students. Be careful with positions that don’t have a good description or request investments on your part.
